Over the centuries, cacao beans were used for numerous purposes in the regions where the cacao trees grew wild, were cultivated on plantations and where the beans were traded. Besides making a nutritious, stimulating beverage, cacao was thought to be an aphrodisiac, a medicine to cure an assortment of ills, a form of currency and a treasure to hoard, the fruit of the gods.
