A Colonial History of Weaving in Ecuador

The Spanish sought riches in all of their conquered lands of the new world. Though they found gold and silver in some locations, not all areas of the South American continent were equally endowed. In the land that would eventually be called Ecuador, what the territory lacked in mineral resources, it made up for in fleece. The kingdom of Quito became a separate administrative entity in 1563. In order to develop an economy, the colonists turned to what the region contained in abundance, an indigenous population of skilled weavers and endless ranchlands where sheep could be raised. As visitors who travel to Ecuador will learn, the haciendas are inextricably tied to the country’s history of weaving.
