Until satellite technology was developed, measuring an object as massive as the Earth remained quite a feat. Though the planet’s general shape had been determined long before, the question of “how round” remained a matter of debate. Under King Louis XV, the French Royal Academy of Science sought to find the definitive answer to the question by sending scientists to take measurements at the Arctic Circle and the equator. The southern expedition paired hydrographer-mathematician, Pierre Bouguer, with Charles-Marie de La Condamine, a mathematician, surveyor and naturalist. The two scientists were accompanied by a small group of fellow explorers drawn from disciplines ranging from botany to art.
