The Weavers of Lake Titicaca

A lake so large it contains inhabited islands, Titicaca stretches across the southeastern edge of Peru where it meets Bolivia. This position allows travelers to visit the vast natural wonder from either side of the border on Lake Titicaca tours. For those who travel to Peru, especially visitors with an interest in weaving, a popular stop is Taquile Island. Twenty-two miles from the lakeside town of Puno, this tiny five square-mile island is home to some 2,000 indigenous residents, many of whom still dress in traditional garb and work cooperatively, practicing weaving traditions that date back centuries. Quechuan, rather than Spanish, is the primary language spoken here. Tourists who visit Taquile during their travel to Peru will feel they have walked back in time.
