The forty-eight passenger Akademik Shokalskiy was originally designed and built in Finland for polar and oceanographic research. This 216-ft ship is nimble and ice-strengthened, capable of reaching some narrow passages on Antarctica tours and Arctic expeditions that many larger cruise ships cannot. Cruising speed in open water is 10 knots.

Cabin Details

The Akademik Shokalskiy has twenty-six outside cabins with private or shared bathroom facilities. Twins have windows or portholes, and the largest staterooms have private facilities, multiple windows and TV/DVD.

Amenities

The ship has a lounge, bar and newly-renovated presentation room. The library contains a collection of Antarctic and polar-themed books.

Dining

The ship’s dining room has unreserved seating. Passengers enjoy buffet-style breakfast with table service. Table-served lunch and dinner feature main course choices from a menu that changes daily. The lounge and bar offer a wide selection of wines and spirits. Cakes are served in the afternoon, and coffee and tea are available 24-hours a day from a self-serve station.

Services

The Akademik Shokalskiy has a cruise staff and crew of thirty for Antarctica travel, including a licensed doctor with clinic. The vessel is equipped with Zodiacs boats for Antarctica shore excursions and select departures. Camping, kayaking, cross-country skiing and mountaineering Antarctica adventure tours are offered. Onboard equipment includes ship-to-shore communications via satellite and two fully enclosed lifeboats with a capacity of eighty.
