An ideal expedition ship for your Antarctica travel, this Class 1A cruise ship is owned by Karlsen Shipping Norway and operated by Karlsen Shipping Company of Halifax, Canada. The 284-ft vessel cruises at 11.5 knots and is certified for Antarctica voyages worldwide, complying with all international safety and environmental regulations. This cruise ship has the exceptional redundancy of four engines. Formerly used as an icebreaker, the ship was completely retrofitted and upgraded for Antarctic expedition cruising in 2000 to accommodate 100 passengers on its Antarctica tours.

Cabins range in size from 100 to 250 sq ft. Options include triples with semi-private facilities and porthole, doubles with private facilities and windows. All but triple rooms have windows and private facilities.

K1 – Triple Cabins

Two lower and one upper berths. Sharing toilet, shower and washbasin with next cabin. Approx 100 sq.feet/10 sq. meters. Portholes. May be sold as a triple or double share (no single supplement).

Two lower beds. Private bathroom with shower, toilet and washbasin. Approx 115 sq. feet/11.5 square meters. Large windows. K2 cabins on deck 3 have a partially obstructed view and one window opens. K2 cabins on deck 4 have non opening windows. May be sold as a double or single (with payment of single supplement).

The cruise ship's many facilities provide spacious areas for on-deck Antarctica wildlife viewing and a relaxing observation lounge in which to unwind between Antarctica tours, enjoy a drink with friends, play cards or simply enjoy the view from its large, panoramic windows. Daily recaps, lectures, briefings, film screenings and other events are held in the observation lounge which has a 24-hour self-serve refreshment station. The Antarctic ship's comfortable library is stocked with reference materials, literature and board games for leisure hours at sea and has a paperback policy of "leave and lend." The mini-gym is equipped with a treadmill, rowing machine, weight machine, exercise ball, bicycles and mats. The ship also offers a first aid room and gift shop.

The informal dining room has unreserved seating and serves a varied menu of delicious international dishes with vegetarian options. All passengers can be seated at one time. The cozy Polar Bar is usually open after dinner until the wee hours.

The Polar Star's experienced and friendly cruise ship staff includes onboard specialists as Antarctica tour guides and a 24-hour doctor on-call. The ship has an open bridge policy and is equipped with a fleet of ten 12-man Zodiac inflatable landing craft for Antarctica shore excursions and an adjacent wet room for storing lifejackets and passengers' excursion gear.
