The National Geographic Explorer is a state-of-the-art, fully stabilized Antarctic expedition ship with ice-strengthened hull that debuted in August of 2008. Designed for 21st century Antarctica touring, the 367-ft cruise ship offers adventure, comfort and informality. The National Geographic Explorer accommodates 148 passengers on Antarctica cruises.

The National Geographic Explorer offers eighty-one outside cabins, all with Antarctic ocean views from windows or portholes, and some with balconies. Each cabin has private bathroom facilities and is climate controlled. The warm wood paneling gives the cabins a stylish, comfortable ambience.

This new luxury Antarctica ship features a main lounge, a glass-enclosed observation lounge and bar, chart room, library, global gallery, fitness center and wellness spa with two treatment rooms, a sauna and a business center with Internet access. The guest decks are connected by an elevator.

The Explorer has two restaurants that serve passengers in one sitting with unreserved seating. The luxury ship's menu is international with a regional spin and its atmosphere informal.

The ship’s staff includes a physician. Laundry facilities are available. The ship is equipped with Zodiaks, kayaks and Antarctic exploration equipment including hydrophones, HD underwater cameras and video microscopes as well as a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) that can dive up to 1,000 feet. The Explorer has an open bridge policy.
