Originally built for Soviet research in 1989, the 436-ft Minerva (formerly the Explorer II) set a new standard in Antarctica travel when it launched its passenger service in 1996. The cruise ship's attention to detail with fresh flowers, polished wood and brass décor, and original works of art make the Minerva seem more country-house hotel than rugged polar vessel. The premium cruise ship has an ice-strengthened hull, stabilizers and bow thrusters, providing its 198 passengers a smooth, agile passage on Antarctica tours.

The Minerva has spacious elegant staterooms ranging in size from 140 to 360 sq ft. Beds can be arranged in twin or queen configurations. Many rooms have walk-out balconies, and all have outside views (some with picture windows), private bathrooms (with hairdryers and a tub or shower ), individual climate controls, telephone and TV/DVD with satellite television service and closed-circuit crew updates.

The Minerva's elegant style with plentiful amenities and relaxed atmosphere puts the Minerva in class of its own. The Promenade Deck offers panoramic views of the Antarctic scenery and a walking/jogging circuit. With its state-of-the art lecture space, the lounge is a gathering place for passenger conversations, discussions with an onboard naturalist and daily updates. The library's collection includes a wide range of fiction and non-fiction titles as well as newspapers, games, puzzles and email access. Other facilities on the Antarctica cruise ship include two open bars, a health club with exercise room, spa, sauna and whirlpool, cinema, full-service beauty salon, gift shop and a separate smoking room. Two elevators service all passenger decks.

The world-class Antarctic cruise ship offers a main dining room and the casual Bridge Cafe, both with open seating, and two open cocktail lounges. Imaginative menus offer gourmet international cuisine as well as light fare and vegetarian dishes. Most special diets can be accommodated with advance notice.

To provide a premium level of service, the Minerva carries a full-service, luxury cruise crew of 146. Passengers have at their disposal massage services, full laundry (as well as a self-service launderette) and a physician-staffed medical clinic. The ship has Zodiak boats for Antarctic shore excursions. Visits to the bridge are scheduled.
