Located in central western Salta Province, 160,000-acre Los Cardones National Park was established in 1996 to protect the high-elevation vegetation of the colorful sierras and dry gorges that characterize the area. The cardon columnar cactus that grows abundantly at higher elevations gives the park its name and is complemented by small forests of the leguminous Churqui. An Inca legend about the area's distinctive plant species tells the romantic tale of two lovers, Pasakana and Kehuailu, who ran away to this area to hide because they couldn’t obtain permission to marry. He would arise in a green poncho, and when she wanted to see the hills, she would blossom as a flower.
