Los Venados is the newest of Argentina's national park projects. It is being developed to protect the near-extinct Pampas deer and the disappearing pampas of San Luis Province. The park's namesake species is a large herbivore whose pelt was once much in demand for export to Europe. Threatened by hunting, loss of habitat and diseases introduced by domesticated species, it is the most endangered of any South American deer. Where once millions of the species roamed, today just five thousand of the animals remain in this grassland area.
