The San Guillermo National Park was established in 1998 to protect Argentina’s largest remaining population of wild camelids, the vicuna and guanaco. Years of hunting of these species for textile manufacturing purposes decimated their numbers. Located in northwest San Juan Province, the park covers 370,600 acres. It comprises a portion of the San Guillermo Biosphere Reserve, a 2.4 million-acre reserve of Andean highlands and Chaco region that contains archeological sites and villages, receiving international protection by UNESCO. These extensive protections have allowed the vicuna population to grow to 7,000 and the guanaco to 5,000.
