Day 1 Arrive Buenos Aires

Southern Explorations guides pick you up at the Buenos Aires International Airport and deliver you to the lap of luxury in the heart of the capital's fanciest neighborhood, the Recoleta. If you arrive early, optional tours of Buenos Aires and nearby sights can be arranged as extensions to traditional Patagonia tours.

Day 2 Buenos Aires – Los Cerros

Early morning transfer to the airport for your flight to El Calafate. Upon arrival in Calafate the guides of Los Cerros will meet you at the airport. From Calafate continue for a four hour drive, with stunning views of Fitz Roy and Glacier National Park in the background. Along the way, enjoy the Patagonian steppe and its unique ecology and impressive landscapes. The drive is properly rewarded upon the arrival at Los Cerros, a hotel located in the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park and Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy massifs. In the evening, you will meet your private guide for a briefing on the next day's adventure. (B,D)

Day 3 Full Day El Chalten

Today you have your choice of Patagonia day hikes, ranging from very mellow to strenuous. Join your knowledgeable guide on your choice of Patagonia adventure. For those looking for a lighter venture, hike to the several relatively close and incredibly beautiful viewpoints: Condor, with views of El Chaltén (Fitz Roy), Cerro Torre, and the Valley of Rio de Las Vuelta; Eagle, offering a panoramic view of Lago Viedma and the Patagonian Steppe; and the Cerro Torre Viewpoint that travels along the Fitz Roy River Valley to view the granite spires. If you prefer a more strenuous adventure, we highly recommend the full-day hike to Laguna de Los Tres at the base of Mt. Fitz Roy, an excellent day hike offering impressive views the whole way through. Hike north to Laguna Capri, a lake with beautiful views of the granite tower, and continue on along the Chorrillo del Salto providing the foreground of many of the most breathtaking photos of Fitz Roy. Here, you’ll break for lunch to take in the scenery and gain energy for the climb. Travel towards the mountain’s base from Rio Blanco to Laguna de los Tres and neighboring Laguna Sucia with turquoise waters. Here you are rewarded with the inspiring backdrop of Glacier de los Tres, Glacier Rio Blanco, the mythical El Chalten, and its adjoining peaks, surely a Patagonia tour must-see. After a memorable day of trekking Patagonia, return to the comfort of Los Cerros for a gourmet meal and restful night's sleep. (B,L,D)

Day 4 Full Day El Chalten

Spend another full day in the El Chalten area with your private guide. You might consider a short hike in the morning leaving the afternoon free to spend cruising Viedma Lake, passing icebergs while approaching the intensely blue Glacier. This half-day excursion begins by traveling south along Rio de las Vueltas to Puerto Bahia Tunel to board the boat. You’ll sail down the full front of the glacier with spectacular views of the shear ice wall, surely snapping photos the whole way. For those looking for a more active day, take another renowned Patagonian trek to the base of Mt. Torre, a stunning granite spire at the edge of the Patagonian Ice Field. Following the winding trail through the Fitz Roy River Valley, you’ll arrive to Lago Toro and the Maestri Lookout with views of Mt. Torre, surrounding peaks of the Adelas range, and Glaciers Grande and Adela. As you will see, the impressive views and unique terrain make this one of the best Patagonia hikes in the area. Return to Los Cerros in the late afternoon to relax with a delicious dinner and views of Rio de las Vueltas. (B,L,D)

Day 5 Los Cerros - Los Notros

After breakfast you will transfer from Los Cerros back to the town of Calafate to begin the next leg of your Patagonia tour. Here you will have time to explore this charming lakefront town before meeting your van to continue the drive. Arrive at the Perito Moreno Glacier, an incredible advancing glacier that is more than three miles wide and over twenty stories high. Today, enjoy short walks around the Los Notros Hotel. Rest for the night at the remarkably situated Los Notros hotel, with views of the glacier from every room. (B,D)

Today, you will board a boat on Lake Argentino to reach the glacier's massive blue terminus, looking out for floating icebergs. You make a beach landing along an ancient beech forest that meets the glacier. Capture the grandeur of this magical sight of trekking Patagonia for the folks back home. If you're feeling especially adventurous, do a little glacier hiking, and with luck, witness an ice wall calving into the lake. In the afternoon, enjoy a picnic lunch, accompanied by the sounds of melting and popping ice as it prepares to plummet into the waters below. In the evening, return to Los Notros for another comfortable night. (B,L,D)

Day 7 Los Notros - Explora

Today is a long travel day, but the areas visited are well worth it. Travel across the Argentinean border to Chile. From there, enter the world-renowned Torres del Paine National Park. View the summer grazing grounds of the now endangered guanacos. Surrounded by the majestic mountains, there you will stop to photograph these fascinating species. The lovely Explora Lodge provides accommodations in a Salto Chico room for the next four nights of our journey. Over evening drinks at the comfortable bar, the guide will discuss a full range of hiking, riding and sightseeing opportunities. (B,L,D)

Day 8-10 Explora Lodge

These three days of trekking Patagonia are dedicated to exploring the magnificent Torres del Paine. Choose your own adventure, from a hike to Grey glacier on the edge of an iceberg-choked lake or a more challenging climb to the base of the Towers that give the park its name. Exhaust your curiosity and your body in beautiful Torres del Paine with short exploratory walks, horseback rides through flowering fields, or full-day hikes, returning to the comfort of the Explora Lodge (Salto Chico room) at day's end. The view alone makes Hosteria Los Notros worth visiting. Situated on Lake Argentino, the Perito Moreno glacier towers before the grand windows of this Patagonia lodge. Watching enormous masses of ice crash into the deep blue waters is a surreal experience that never grows old. From Los Notros, you can navigate through chunks of gleaming icebergs on the lake, take a hike through the crevices and caves of the glacier itself or simply enjoy views from the catwalk. If you care to travel a little farther on your Patagonia tour, you may have a rewarding outdoor barbeque at one of the nearby estancias. Perito Moreno is just one of thirteen glaciers in Los Glaciares National Park that reach into Lake Viedma and Lake Argentino. Returning from your explorations, you'll enjoy dinner by a roaring fire with views of the glacial landscape stretching out before you.
