For centuries, travelers have sought to decipher the mysteries of Easter Island's huge emblematic figures placed throughout this tiny volcanic land mass, half way between Tahiti and Chile. Were it not the most remote inhabited island on earth, more visitors would have the opportunity to gaze upon these famed moai that range in height from six to almost seventy feet. Since direct flights link Santiago with Chile's far-flung protectorate, it will never be easier to get there than when you make your Patagonia tour. These archeological sites have been the economic salvation of the island's indigenous Polynesian population. Attracting tourists interested in Easter Island travel from throughout the world, visitors come to ponder the elongated face, prominent features and heavy brow of the many moai. Why were hundreds of these basalt figures carved, what do they mean, how were they moved from the island's faraway quarries? Adding to the logistical questions are the over 300 even larger rectangular stone platforms called ahus that ring the island, some supporting moai. These archeological sites remain one of the great mysteries and engineering feats of human endeavor, making Easter Island tours a photographer's dream and an unforgettable extension to any Chile Patagonia tour.

Transfer to the Santiago airport for your flight to Easter Island's Mataveri Airport. On the first of your Easter Island tours here, you'll spend a half-day exploring the south coast, visiting three important sites: the much photographed Ahu Tahai, distinguished by the dissimilarity of its five moai; the vast volcano crater lake of Rano Kao and the partially restored ceremonial village of Orongo. Here a cult once lived that worshipped the supreme bird God, Makemake, and held an annual competition to designate one tribal member its birdman, conferring celebrity status for the year. After the excursion, you will be transferred to your hotel. (B)

Sun, surf, sand and ancient culture
This full-day Easter Island travel excursion takes in the eastern side of the island. You'll explore the eight moai of Ahu Vaihu, the four moai of Akahanga and nearby village remnants plus the ruins of gigantic Ahu Tongariki that supported fifteen moai, some weighing thirty tons, until they were dislodged by a tidal wave set off by Chile's 1960 earthquake. You'll also visit Ahu Te Pito Te Kura, the largest moved moai and the seven moai of Ahu Nau Nau. Another significant stop as you travel Easter Island is the quarry of Rano Raraku where almost all of the moai were carved, and seventy remain standing. Finally you'll spend time at Anakena, the island's main beach with restored ahu moai before returning to your comfortable hotel for another night.
