Day 1 (Sat) ARRIVE SAN JOSÉ

Arrival at the San José International Airport where a Southern Explorations guide will meet you to transfer you to a hotel in the capital for your overnight stay.

Day 2 (Sun) SAN JOSÉ - CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK / CASA CORCOVADO

In the morning, you'll be picked-up at your San José hotel and transferred to the local airport for a forty-five-minute flight to Palmar Sur. Upon arrival, you'll be transported by bus accompanied by hotel staff to La Hacienda located at the Sierpe dock. From there, you'll take a ninety-minute boat ride downriver, viewing mangrove wetlands along the river's edge until you reach Casa Corcovado. After lunch, spend a leisurely afternoon exploring the nature trails and the beach. Overnight at Casa Corcovado. (B,L,D)

Day O3 (Mon) CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK / CASA CORCOVADO

This memorable day of your Costa Rica ecological tour will be spent viewing wildlife. The wilderness park is home to many endangered species, monkeys, jaguars and tapirs as well as 400 bird species including the country's largest population of scarlet macaws, making it a popular stop for tropical biologists and ecotourists alike. Today you will Enjoy a full-day excursion to Corcovado National Park or Cano Island accompanied by a nature guide. Picnic lunch and snorkeling gear will be provided. Day 4 (Tue) CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK - ARENAL VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK

Morning departure (depending upon the tides), to fly from Carate back to San José where a Southern Explorations guide will pick you up for the drive to Arenal, with two spectacular stops along the way. The first is the Poas Volcano, where you'll see one of the world's largest craters, spanning a mile across. Then it's on to La Paz Waterfall Gardens for a scenic two-mile walk on well-maintained trails past five waterfalls with views of the Poas Volcano, a butterfly garden, an orchid garden, a hummingbird feeding station for seventeen different species, a serpentine and, if you like, a ride in an oxcart. Enjoy lunch at the gardens and continue your Costa Rica ecotour to Arenal. Overnight at a hotel in the area. (B,L)

Day 5 (Wed) ARENAL VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK

Today's destination on your Costa Rica adventure is the Arenal Volcano, one of the Western Hemisphere's most active volcanoes with a perfectly-formed cone. Its frequent eruptions and the many other interesting natural sites in the area make this park a stop on most every Costa Rica ecotour. For a close-up view of the prolific birds, flowers and lush vegetation of this primary rainforest, you'll take a guided canopy tour via two miles of interpretive trails and across fifteen hanging bridges, ranging in length from sixteen to almost 330 feet to reach Arenal Lake. The trails are paved, and the suspension bridges are built of aluminum galvanized steel and concrete to ensure maximum safety. In the late afternoon, you'll be returned to your hotel. The day has a spectacular finish, a night tour by sky tram to a mountaintop observation platform where lava eruptions are visible on cloudless nights. Night creatures such as bats, frogs, olingos, birds and a wide variety of insects are often seen. Another night at your comfortable hotel. (B)

Day 6 (Thu) ARENAL VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK - MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST RESERVE

This morning you'll travel by bus and boat to the town of Monteverde and be taken to the famed Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, the ultimate Costa Rica ecotour destination. The reserve is a 6,200-acre wildlife sanctuary established by an American Quaker community in 1949 and now owned and operated by the Tropical Science Center. You'll travel through the mists of tropical cloud forests filled with evergreens, vines, orchids, bromeliads, mosses and ferns via the Sky Trek, an extensive system of trails, canopy platforms, a treetop platform and a suspension bridge. This portion of your Costa Rica ecological tour includes an adrenaline-pumping zip-line flight deep into the forest, a highlight of everyone's tour of Costa Rica. Enforced visitor limits on the trails maintain the sanctity of the Reserve. Overnight at a hotel near Monteverde. (B)

Day 7 (Fri) MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST BIOLOGICAL RESERVE - SAN JOSÉ

Today's activities in the Reserve will take place in the privately-operated Selvatura Park where you'll experience one of Costa Rica's longest canopy tours. This Costa Rica ecotour excursion includes fifteen cable bridges, eighteen platforms, and even a Tarzan swing for anyone who is game. The tour is appropriate for all ages, though some safety restrictions may apply. At the end of the day, you will be transferred back to San José for your last night in Costa Rica. Overnight at a San Jose hotel. (B)
