In the realm of Ecuador adventure travel, Amazon tours don’t get more sublime than this. Since 1986, before the dawn of ecotourism, this boutique lodge has been offering authentic Amazon rainforest adventures. Wildlife experts consider La Selva Jungle Lodge one of the world’s best birding sites. Located in the pristine Amazon rainforest of northeastern Ecuador, La Selva is set on the shore of Lake Garzococha near the Napo River, a major whitewater tributary. This is an area of great biodiversity near the country’s largest protected tract of rainforest, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. An obvious choice for birders wishing to travel to the Amazon, the lodge caters to a wide range of visitors, ideal for families, student groups and solo female travelers.
During your stay, you will be accompanied through the rainforest by experienced English-speaking naturalists. Native birding guides and wildlife trackers enhance the experience. Generally fewer than forty guests stay at the lodge at one time, allowing a guide for each group of eight visitors. Rustic by design, the comfortable and immaculate complex offers private bungalow accommodations with first-class services and amenities, including an indigenous spa and gourmet meals prepared with fresh locally-produced ingredients.
Each day, guests may choose from a variety of morning, afternoon and evening Amazon rainforest excursions, hike through an extensive trail system on easy or challenging routes, swim and fish in a nearby lake, relax in a hammock, all according to their mood. To give visitors the most memorable experience possible during their travel to the Amazon, activities begin early at La Selva when wildlife are on the move or gathered at certain locations to feed or drink. During the heat of the day, after lunch until late afternoon is unscheduled, giving visitors time to relax or be pampered in the spa. Following a leisurely dinner, guests may enjoy an after-dark excursion into the rainforest in search of nocturnal wildlife.
Days at La Selva Lodge are filled with exotic experiences, hikes through virgin forest, observing the wildlife of one’s childhood imagination, and leisure re-defined. Daytime excursions are scheduled with the guides according to the wishes of the group among the following:
SACHA HUAGRA TRAIL
Experience the splendor of the Amazon on a scenic half-day hike across Garzacocha Lake into virgin forest. Surrounded by giant species such as the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra) and the Strangler fig tree (Ficus sp), you will observe wildlife of the Amazon rainforest from the trail, arriving back at the lodge in time for lunch.
PARROT CLAY LICKS
Home to over a third of the country’s bird species, Yasuni National Park is a highlight of Ecuador adventure travel. On this Amazon rainforest excursion, you will observe the colorful bird species of the region that gather at the park’s clay licks. Here, hidden from view, you will be able to see and photograph parrots, parakeets and macaws.
DANTA’S TRAIL
On the other side of the Napo River, this challenging three to five hour hike takes you into a mountainous ecosystem with its own unique bird and wildlife species.
GARZACOCHA-MANDICOCHA-MANDIYACU
On this three to four hour trip, you’ll hike the Mandicocha trail to reach the flooded Igapo rainforest ecosystem of Mandicocha Lake, where you’ll board paddle canoes for an hour-long glide down Mandiyacu stream to observe the myriad of wildlife that gather along its shores.
WALK TO SILVERIO’S HOUSE
Across Garzacocha Lake, this hike takes a challenging primitive path through primary forest to reach a neighboring village situated near the Napo River. Here you will observe indigenous life and enjoy an informative conversation with a Kichwa family.
CHAWAMANGO TRAIL
This three to four hour excursion travels east at the Mandicocha trailhead and circles back to Garzacocha lake.
MATAPALO TRAIL
This is a perfect introduction to your surroundings on the day you arrive at the lodge. On this leisurely walk, you’ll observe photogenic heliconia plants and the Rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) among other species.
TOUCANETA’S TRAIL
This two-hour walk acquaints you with the lodge complex and its Amazon rainforest setting of tropical flora and fauna.
LITTLE CHAWAMANGO
On this short excursion, you’ll go by foot along the shore of Lake Garzacocha and return to the lodge by canoe.
FOREST CANOPY OBSERVATION TOWER
Always an Amazon jungle highlight, this excursion takes you above the rainforest. From this unique vantage point atop a 135-ft observation platform, monkeys and other Amazon rainforest wildlife may be seen as well as offering a panoramic view of the Amazon Basin.
BUTTERFLY FARM
A trip to the butterfly farm near the lodge is always a memorable event for visitors during their travel to Ecuador. Rather than capturing rainforest butterflies, this facility breeds some 20,000 butterflies annually for sale to zoos and botanical gardens throughout the world. Here one may observe and photograph many tropical butterfly species at close range, and lucky visitors may witness the miracle of metamorphosis. Daily excursions to the butterfly farm take place in the afternoon.
Night excursions are a favorite with lodge guests during their travel to the Amazon, providing a completely different experience of the rainforest.
CANOE
These nightly trips give guests an opportunity to observe nocturnal Amazon rainforest species such as fishing bats, nightjars, insects and perhaps caimans.
WALKING
These excursions provide opportunities to see tarantulas, whip-scorpions, toads, frogs, snakes and other species that are not generally observed during day-hikes.
