CHINCHEROS MARKET: A PERUVIAN GEM
The Chincheros crafts market produces some of Peru’s highest quality textiles The Chincheros crafts market produces some of Peru’s highest quality textiles
While traveling in Peru last May, SE President Justin Laycob discovered a gem. The crafts market of the Andean village of Chincheros near Cusco, Peru produces some of the country’s highest quality textiles. It is also an artists’ cooperative that offers communal living and a support system for the local women who work with the textiles. This spectacular market provides a great opportunity for visitors to find authentic souvenirs while aiding the local community of artisans.
Check out our Peru tours, many of which feature a day at Chincheros

  SOUTHERN EXPLORATIONS UPDATES
We have found a new and more convenient location in Whistler to serve our Canadian passengers We have found a new and more convenient location in Whistler to serve our Canadian passengers
SE moves locations in Whistler
We have found a new and more convenient location in Whistler to serve our Canadian passengers. Our Canadian bookings are up by 15%, and we are excited to see our friends of the North taking advantage of their strong economy to explore their interest in South and Central America adventure travel.
Eric Bartanen returns from Peru
Operations Director, Eric had a rewarding trip to Peru that included hiking the Inca Trail and visiting the Amazon. While there, he had the opportunity to discuss Incan construction practices, take jungle walks with a local shaman and even bungee jump. In his travels, he conducted a review of gear, guides, staff and hotel accommodations used by Southern Explorations. He found that our Peruvian operations continue to maintain SE’s high standards of quality. Our clients agree!
Lacy Stockton Returns from Argentina and Chile
Sales Associate and Special Projects Coordinator, Lacy enjoyed a month-long training trip in the Patagonia regions of both Chile and Argentina. Since her return, she has played the lead role in developing our new Argentina trips.
Justin Laycob is heading to Brazil
In September and December, SE President Justin Laycob is traveling to Brazil, the newest of our destinations. He will be exploring new locales for future tours and establishing operations in the northern part of the country. He will also work on expanding itineraries in our current locations. Watch out for new Brazil trips to come in March 2009!

GIVING BACK TO THE LANDS WE VISIT
Southern Explorations supports the environmental protection and welfare of the communities in the precious lands we visit as well as at home. Here is what some of these charitable organizations accomplish and what our recent donations have aided:
American Whitewater Association: SE became an industry partner with the American Whitewater Association (AWA) to support river conservation here at home. The AWA helps protect the water quality of U.S. waterways, restores shoreline and river habitat, and promotes the responsible recreational use of rivers.
Click here to check AWA out!
Ecuadorian Rivers Institute: SE recently contributed to the Ecuadorian Rivers Institute aiding efforts to stop a proposed hydro-electric project that will dam the Jondachi River. Located between the Andes and the Amazon, the Jondachi is one of the most pristine, healthy, and free-flowing rivers in all of Ecuador. Click here to read more about the dam’s potential catastrophic impact on the environment and the inhabitants of the local area.
Save the Jondachi!
Friends of the Futaleufu: SE recently donated $500 to this organization to help recovery efforts following the recent massive volcanic eruptions of Chaiten in Chile Patagonia. The disaster displaced communities, killed wildlife/live stock and covered the immediate area in Volcanic ash. The good news is that the region has recovered, and the beautiful Futaleufu River is back to its clear turquoise hue! Join us for a world-class Futaleufu whitewater rafting adventure on one of these fantastic trips:
