The beautiful port of Portobello
After breakfast, your guide on this first day of your Panama vacation will pick you up for a private full-day city tour. You'll start by visiting Panama La Vieja, the first city established by the Spanish in 1671 and later destroyed by infamous English pirate Henry Morgan. Then walk through Casco Viejo, the second colonial city to be constructed. This gentrifying neighborhood of narrow bricked streets with shops and cafes reflects the origins of its past colonial inhabitants. Afterwards you'll visit Cerro Ancon, one of the highest points in the city for a panoramic view followed by a gourmet lunch at one of the city's many fine restaurants. After lunch, you'll visit the Miraflores Locks, entrance to the Pacific side of the canal, and learn about this engineering masterpiece in motion. Before being transferred back to your hotel, you'll stop at the French Cemetery, where each cross represents 1,000 workers who died in France's unsuccessful attempt to build the canal in 1884. (B,L)

Today you'll be free to enjoy the capital and environs at your leisure. Explore the city, go shopping or just relax by the pool. Many optional tours of the vicinity are available upon request. To name a few: Hike through a rainforest. Visit Portobelo, once a critical Spanish port and today a sleepy seaside town where scuba enthusiasts on Panama vacations enjoy easily-accessible dive sites. Sir Francis Drake is supposedly buried at sea off the coast here. Escape the heat, exploring the hill town of El Valle, with its flower-lined streets and huge public market, enjoying the refreshing mountain air. Go biking or hiking on Isla Grande. A complimentary cheese, wine and fruit basket will be waiting at the hotel where you'll spend the night. (B)

A dramatic Pacific coastline along the Azuero Peninsula
After an early morning breakfast, you'll leave the modern world behind to get acquainted with the country's diverse terrain on a visit to the Azuero Peninsula, bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Gulf of Panama on the east. This important region is the center of Panama's folkloric traditions comprised of three culturally-rich provinces: Herrera, Los Santos and Veraguas. Azuero is known for its indigenous crafts, such as the beautiful pollera hooped skirt and ceramics with pre-Colombian designs as well as its many festivals. The peninsula is architecturally interesting, with red tiled roofs and elaborate ironwork in such colonial beach towns as Parita and Pedasi. You'll stop along the way for lunch and to see other points of interest before reaching your final destination, Villa Camilla, your secluded elegant accommodations for the next two days. (B,L,D)
