Colchagua Valley is known for producing some of Chile’s best wine, particularly the Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Syrah and Malbec varieties. After breakfast, you will meet your guide and driver to begin the drive south on the Pan-American Highway to the Colchagua Valley. In the late nineteenth century due to the large wealth of mining in Chile, important families introduced fine varieties of French origin, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot and Malbec, which replaced the Spanish varieties. Since then and especially during the 1970’s and 80’s, due to Chile’s rebirth as a wine producer, this wine region has grown in both quality and quantity. The first winery you will visit, at the end of the road in Apalta, is the Neyen Winery which focuses all its production on one Bordeaux-style blend from their 115 year-old Carmenere vines. The Neyen de Apalta winery is the perfect mix of tradition and modernity. It was founded by the Rojas family in 2002 on the site of one of the area’s pioneering wineries that dates back to the late 19th century. Your next stop will be Laura Hartwig. Laura Bisquertt inherited the property of “Santa Laura” from her father in 1966. Later, she and her husband, Alejandro Hartwig moved to Canada, where they discovered their passion for excellent wine. Returning to Chile to retire, they decided to open their Winery and named it after their daughter. Next you will be taken to your lunch at Vino Bello Restaurant. Before leaving this region you will visit Caliterra, originally a joint venture between the Mondavi and Hunneus families, now owned by Eduardo Chadwick (also owner of Viñedo Chadwick, Seña and Errázuriz).
