Riding the pampas on horseback and hiking and kayaking in the wilds of Patagonia is the fantasy of many an adventure traveler. We’ve assembled two weeks of Chile tours to fulfill that dream. For the first segment of your Patagonia trip, you’ll be accompanied by baqueanos, seasoned local horsemen of Chile Patagonia who know just how to host and care for travelers on horseback Patagonia tours, and after that, have knowledgeable guides the rest of the way. During your Patagonia travel, you’ll visit Chile’s most famous national park, Torres del Paine, a paradise of breathtaking glaciers, pristine turquoise lakes and awe-inspiring mountain views. On these Patagonia tours you’ll observe wildlife, hike through virgin forests and stay in camp-sites as picturesque as the wilderness itself where tourists are few and far between. Day 1 ARRIVE PUNTA ARENAS

Your Patagonia travel begins on your arrival in Punta Arenas where you’ll go by taxi on your own, from the airport to your hotel to check in and get settled. In the evening, the leader for your Chile tours will meet you in the hotel lobby to escort you to a nearby restaurant for dinner and to provide an overview of your Patagonia tours ahead. Afterwards you will enjoy a restful night at your comfortable accommodations in Punta Arenas.

Day 2 PUNTA ARENAS – PUERTO NATALES - ESTANCIA CAMP
After breakfast, you will be picked up at your hotel for the start of your Patagonia travel across the wide open pampas and estancias that characterize the region. Your first destination is the waterfront town of Puerto Natales, the gateway for most visitors on Chile travel to Torres del Paine and capital of the Esperanza region. Here you’ll have a choice of restaurants and time for some souvenir shopping before continuing your Patagonia travel towards spectacular Torres del Paine National Park. The route takes you along the eastern side of the park over estancia lands and on some bumpy terrain to reach a remote camping spot in a valley with breathing views of the Torres del Paine peaks. If weather is inclement, cooking and dining will take place in a small sheltered puesto (gaucho post). While dinner is being prepared, you’ll put up tents and enjoy the extraordinary views. Day 3 CASCADA ZAMORA – LAGUNA AZUL – PUESTO TERCERA (Horseback Riding)
Today begins your horseback Torres del Paine tours. After a short introduction to western riding and a safety briefing from the baqueanos, you’ll set off on your unique Chile travel adventure into the hills and forests of the scenic Sierra Contreras. Your destination is the beautiful waterfall, Cascada Zamora. Visitors here rarely encounter any other tourists and so have this picturesque, wooded setting all to themselves for a delicious lunch. Next you’ll ride high over the pampas with vistas of the Las Chinas Valley and the Sierra Baguales in the distance to reach the remote puesto Mercado. You’ll return to camp by a different route, passing beautiful Laguna Azul. Dinner and overnight will be at puesto Tercera. (Overnight wild camping) (B,L,D)

Day 4 PUESTO TERCERA - LAGUNA AMARGA (Horseback Riding)
More familiar with your horse and comfortable in the saddle, you’re ready for today’s Patagonia tours across some lovely open pampas towards the heart of the park and Laguna Amarga. Riding in the direction of the dramatically beautiful mountains of the Paine Massif, you pass through the summer grazing grounds of the large herds of guanacos that inhabit the area. Here there will be plenty of time for observing and photographing the athletic antics of these fascinating, agile animals and to pick some delicious ripe calafate berries from the many bushes that grow in the vicinity. The trail crosses some rivers before reaching the Laguna Amarga area of the park, the end of today’s ride. Here you will be transferred to a vehicle for the short drive to tonight’s campsite, Las Torres, where you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner, hot shower and restful night. Day 5 LAGUNA AMARGA – LAS TORRES CAMP (Hike)
After a hearty camp breakfast, you’ll be ready for today’s challenging hike, a climb to the base of the Paine towers. Your Patagonia hiking starts with an uphill walk to reach the wooded mountain trails of this beautiful hike. The final section is a series of hops over glacial moraine before stopping to rest and have lunch in the shadow of these fabulous granite peaks. Here waterfalls flow off hanging glaciers into a green basin of floating icebergs, and ice pieces plummet with a crashing roar. In the afternoon, you will descend to your valley campsite equipped with showers. Those with left over energy may wish to walk to the nearby hotel bar for a Pisco sour while dinner is being prepared. Day 6 LAKE NORDJENSKOLD – LAS TORRES CAMP (Hike)

After an early breakfast, today’s Patagonia tours consist of a shoreline hike around majestic Lake Nordjenskold, with the immense granite mountains that form the centerpiece of this geographical wonder as a backdrop. Tonight you will be dining and sleeping in the Refugio Los Cuernos, beautifully situated beside a turquoise lake in view of the mountains. (Overnight Refugio Cuernos - bunk bed accommodation with shared facilities (if full, tents will be used). (B,L,D)

Day 7 FRENCH VALLEY – LAKE PEHOE (Hike)
After breakfast in the convivial refugio, your Patagonia hiking continues along the shores of Lake Nordjenskold towards the French Valley. This is a beautiful and justly famous trail that enters a superb natural granite amphitheatre with a view of the French Glacier. After a picnic lunch in an idyllic spot, your Patagonia travel moves on to another azure lake, Lago Pehoe. While dinner is being prepared, you will set up camp on the shore with time to relax and take a shower. Shelter is available for dining in case of bad weather. (Overnight camping with facilities). Hiking time: 5 - 9 hours depending on how far the group hikes into the French Valley.

Day 8 GREY GLACIER – LAKE PEHOE (Hike)
The destination of today’s Patagonia travel is the immense Grey Glacier. The trail winds through ancient beech forests and along a spectacular path high above Grey Lake with fantastic glacier views throughout the hike. After reaching Refugio Grey and Mirador, you’ll enjoy lunch on the shores of the iceberg-choked lake before starting the descent back to your scenic campsite at Pehoe Lake for dinner, a shower and a second peaceful night’s stay. Hiking time: 6-7 hours

Day 9 LAKE PEHOE – SERRANO RIVER (Horseback Riding)
After breakfast and packing up camp, you will be reunited with your horse and the baqueanos for a brisk, exciting ride to the Serrano River. You’ll start out along the flower-lined trails that skirt Pehoe Lake before reaching the wide open pampas to enjoy an exhilarating canter to the emerald green waters of the Serrano River. Tonight’s picturesque campsite is along the shore. Showers and shelter for inside dining are available. (Overnight camping with facilities). (B,L,D)

Day 10 TYNDAL LAKE AND GLACIER (Sea Kayaking)
This morning you will rise early to pack up and prepare for the next segment of your Patagonia travel, a river adventure. The day starts with a session on safety techniques from your guide before loading the luggage and equipment onto two-person kayaks. The float downriver enters virgin wilderness inhabited by a variety of bird species, with beautiful views of the distant snowcapped mountains in the distance. The afternoon of Patagonia travel goes upstream to enter Tyndall Lake. The payoff for this short but fairly strenuous leg is one of the most stunning sights in all of Patagonia tours, a close-up view of a towering valley glacier, ninety feet high in some locations. This breathtaking spot is rarely visited so you will enjoy the spectacle all to yourself while dinner is prepared, a fire is lit on the beach and some Chilean wine is poured. You’ll camp here for the night, under the stars if you wish. Night camping in virgin wilderness (or under the stars if you prefer). (Overnight wild camping). (B,L,D)

Day 11 TYNDALL & GEIKE GLACIERS (Sea Kayaking)
For today’s Patagonia tours, you’ll re-board your kayak to paddle downriver for the start of today’s hike. This wilderness walk takes you into remote glacier country for awe-inspiring views of Tyndall and Geike glaciers as well as the Patagonian ice sheet. The stunning setting for lunch is alongside a lake containing hundreds of icebergs. Returning to the river for the last leg of your Patagonia kayaking journey, you will paddle to tonight’s campsite, in the shadow of Mount Balmaceda. After dinner and a relaxing evening, you will be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the Serrano Glacier and its tumbling ice. (Overnight wild camping). (B,L,D)

Day 12 SERRANO RIVER – LAST HOPE SOUND CRUISE - PUERTO NATALES (Sea Kayaking)

After breakfast, if time and weather allow, you will have an opportunity to kayak into the melt-water lake fed by the Serrano Glacier to paddle among the floating icebergs, a most memorable setting. After lunch you will board a modern cutter for a comfortable ride back across Last Hope Sound to Puerto Natales. On arrival, you will go by taxi to the family-run Weskar Lodge, located a short walk from town. The hotel’s setting offers lovely views of Last Hope Sound and the Serrano Glacier in the distance. A restaurant, laundry and internet service are available on-site. (Overnight hotel). (B,L)

Day 13 PUERTO NATALES – PUNTA ARENAS

You’ll have a free morning to explore this beautifully situated town. After an early lunch, you will set out on the last of your Patagonia tours, traveling to the Otway Sound Penguin Colony to observe and photograph these burrowing creatures. You will then continue on to Punta Arenas for a final comfortable night’s stay a local hotel. (B,L)
Transfer time: 4.5 hours with the penguin colony visit

Day 14 PUNTA ARENAS
On your final day of Chile travel in Patagonia, you’ll taxi to the Punta Arenas Airport to make connections for your flight elsewhere in South America or your return home. (B)
