Moray, ancient experimental crop terraces
Duration: 2 days
Cost: $485 per person
Explore an area of ever-changing mountain views to reach three fascinating destinations visited by few travelers: Moray where the Incas once managed sophisticated crop experiments; Maras, a centuries-old salt mining area; and Cachicata, a quarry where the Incas formed and extracted the huge boulders for such buildings as the Ollantaytambo fortress. This Peru tour extension offers insights into perhaps the most thought-provoking of the Inca mysteries: how the civilization was able to build its monumental structures and a 14,000-mile network of paved roads with such primitive technology and without the benefit of the wheel. For hikers and history buffs, this Peru trek is a stimulating way to spend an extra day in the Inca heartland and enhance the experience of a Machu Picchu tour.
Maras, Moray & Cachicata Itinerary
Day 1 MORAY AND MARAS
View Sacred Valley accommodations picture gallery
Travel past small farms above the serene Urubamba valley to Moray, the site of three circular terraces, thought to have been used by the Incas as an open-air crop experimentation station. Continue past the living village and pre-Inca settlement of Maras. Here a geo-thermally heated stream feeds hundreds of small salt terraces, creating a bizarre white-on-brown landscape that has been used for salt mining since well before the time of the Incas. Enjoy a delightful picnic lunch amidst Andean scenery of the Sacred Valley and return to your charming hotel in the late afternoon for a rest after this exciting day of our Peru tour.
Day 2 CACHICATA Day HIKE
Today set out for the Cachicata quarry, a rigorous hike of three to four hours. The trail crosses the Urubamba River and ascends gradually, offering views of the Ollantaytambo valley below, the Vilcanota mountain range and Mt. Veronica (18,745 ft) before arriving at the ancient quarry. The quarry tour will be followed by lunch in a spectacular outdoor setting before descending back to the Sacred Valley.
