Sandoval Lake Lodge Itinerary
-
Day 1 CUSCO - SANDOVAL LAKE LODGE
Transfer from Puerto Maldonado airport to the port on the Madre de Dios River. A twenty-five minute journey downriver by motor-canoe brings you to the Sandoval Lake Lodge trailhead. From here our Peru tour continues with a two-mile walk or rickshaw ride through secondary forest, before reaching a small canal where you'll board a canoe to paddle 220 yards through a flooded forest of 100-ft Mauritia palms. Where the canal opens onto the shimmering lake, you will be transferred to a catamaran for the ride to the lodge. After lunch and a brief rest to avoid the early afternoon heat, re-board the catamaran to explore an area of the lake where hundreds of red-bellied macaws can be heard as they return to the palm forest at nightfall. Return to the lodge for dinner followed by an exotic evening excursion to search for the rare black caiman. If it is a clear night, you will be treated to a brilliant display of stars as you float in the middle of the lake.
-
Day 2 JUNGLE LODGE
Thanks to a pre-dawn wake-up call, you'll to be on the lake by sunrise to get a fresh start of this portion of our Peru tour. With luck, your early arrival will allow you to encounter the family of giant otters that frequents the lake, and to watch the fish-eating birds when they are most active. This scenic outing may provide an opportunity to photograph the prehistoric-looking hoatzin bird species. After returning to the lodge for a late breakfast, you'll head into the cool under-story of the tall virgin forest near the lake to see some towering wild Brazil-nut trees and watch a demonstration of how your hosts collect, crack open and commercialize this important natural product. After lunch and an hour of relaxation, you'll board a catamaran to explore more of the eastern part of the lake, where you may see as many as five monkey species, including the brown Capuchin, that live in the nearby forest. After dinner, you may go looking for black caimans on the lake or go on a short night walk through the primary forest.
-
Day 3 JUNGLE LODGE
Rising again at dawn, you'll have a quick snack before our Peru travels take us aboard the catamaran to return to the western end of the lake in hopes of encountering the giant otters. After a late breakfast, explore some of the Peru Amazon rainforest trails. As you walk, the rainforest will be brought to life as your resident naturalist-guide explains its ecology and diverse flora and fauna. Return for lunch and an optional rest for those who would like to escape the early afternoon heat. Anyone still full of energy may wish to independently explore some of the forest trails. In the cooler late afternoon, the group will once again board the catamaran to further explore the lake, and, weather permitting, experience a spectacular sunset over the lake before returning to the lodge for dinner. After dinner, there is a final opportunity to look for black caiman on the lake or to go on a short night hike through the forest.
-
Day 4 SANDOVAL LAKE LODGE - CUSCO
After breakfast at dawn, you'll take a brief paddle around the west end of the lake for a last glimpse of Amazonian wildlife before returning to Puerto Maldonado for the flight to Lima.

About Sandoval Lake Lodge
-
Located a 25 minute motor canoe ride down the River Madre de Dios from Puerto Maldonado, Sandoval Lake Lodge is perched above what many rainforest specialists feel is the most attractive lake in Southern Peru, if not in the entire Peruvian Amazon.
-
The whole complex is housed in one structure and includes 25 double occupancy rooms (all with private baths), hot showers, and a spacious dining room overlooking the lake.
-
No other lodge in Tambopata-Madidi is on the banks of a protected oxbow lake. Our short Sandoval Lake Lodge program includes two nights of fully-screened accommodation in 25 double-occupancy rooms complete with en suite facilities with hot-water showers, electricity, fans, meals, airport transfers in Puerto Maldonado, naturalist guides, lake excursions by day in search of Giant Otters, monkeys, and macaws, forest excursions, night excursions in search of caimans, and evening slide shows. The lodge specializes in small groups and individualized attention in its overriding quest to conserve the lake and surrounding rainforest. Sandoval Lake Lodge is built out of ecologically-correct driftwood mahogany and is owned jointly by a nonprofit conservation group and five families of indigenous Brazil nut collectors. This is a Peru tour worth the extra time!
