On your evening arrival in Lima for your Peru tours, you'll be met by a Southern Explorations guide at the airport and transferred to the luxurious Marriott Hotel in the capital's beautiful Miraflores district.

Day 2 LIMA - PTO MALDONADO - RESERVA AMAZONICA JUNGLE LODGE

In the morning, you'll be transferred to the airport for your short flight to Puerto Maldonado. A one-hour motorized canoe ride up Peru's Tambopata River delivers you to the lodge. You'll have time to unpack and unwind before receiving a short welcome orientation on your Peru vacation package and a complete briefing about the lodge and its activities. On your first afternoon, you may choose to climb the 115-ft scaffolding of the Canopy Tower that offers spectacular views of the river and surrounding forest. (B,L,D)

Day 3 RESERVA AMAZONICA JUNGLE LODGE

Classic luxury in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest at Reserva Amazonica Jungle Lodge
After breakfast, you'll depart Reserva Amazonica by motorized canoe for a walk to Lake Sandoval before hiking through nearby Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, home to a diverse mix of tropical reptiles, birds and mammals and a highlight of Peru tours. You may see paiche and black caimans; amazing birds such as hoatzins, herons and ospreys; and red howler, brown capuchin and squirrel monkey species; as well as the extremely rare and critically endangered giant river otter. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the Concepcion Farm followed by a guided visit through a garden of more than 200 medicinal plants.
You'll return to the lodge in the late afternoon where a variety of activities are yours to enjoy. You may wish to learn about the local community's ethno-botanical center and hike the surrounding trails with a resident guide who will explain the everyday uses of its forest resources. Early in the morning you'll return downriver to the airport of Pto. Maldonado for the short flight to Cusco, colonial jewel and ancient capital of the Inca Empire. A Southern Explorations guide will be waiting at the airport to take you on a tour of the stately Plaza de Armas on the way to your hotel. Enjoy a free day and evening of relaxation while becoming accustomed to the elevation (10,856 ft). Our guide will be at your service to arrange any activities you might like, though we recommend taking it easy to allow your body to acclimatize. You'll spend the night at the deluxe Libertador Hotel or may upgrade to the Monasterio Hotel for an additional cost if space is available. Both hotels are superbly situated for exploring the major sights of Cusco. You'll spend the night at the luxurious Libertador hotel, superior room. Day 5 CUSCO

You'll start the day with a private guided walking tour of Cusco, through its interesting markets, the cathedral and the Koricancha Temple of the Sun ruins. After a delicious lunch, you'll be escorted on an afternoon tour of Inca temples and fortresses in and around Cusco, including massive Sacsayhuaman; the subterranean altars of Kenko; the small Puka Pukara fortress that protected Cusco from invaders; and the Tambo Machay water temple. In the late afternoon, you'll return to your hotel to relax or further explore the city's well-preserved colonial architecture and experience its culture. Day 6 CUSCO - SACRED VALLEY

Today your tour of Inca history takes you on a guided excursion through the legendary Sacred Valley, as majestic today as it was during the reign of the Incas. You'll see how the Incas built agricultural terracing along steep valley walls and visit the temple ruins of Pisac backed by stunning views of the jagged granite mountains beyond. You'll stop in the town of Pisac, home to one of the most eclectic textile markets in the Andes and one of the highlights of Peru tours, to observe the local culture and enjoy a delicious Peruvian lunch. In the afternoon, you'll travel on to the village of Ollantaytambo (9,185 ft.) to visit the ruins of its impressive Inca fortress, and spend the night at the luxurious Tambo Del Inca hotel. (B)

Day 7 SACRED VALLEY - MORAY - MARAS

Today you'll travel past small farms above the valley of the Urubamba River to Moray, containing the remains of three circular terraces thought to have been used by the Incas as an open-air crop experimentation station. You'll stop in the town of Maras, originally a pre-Inca settlement where a geothermal-heated stream feeds hundreds of small salt terraces, forming a unique white-on-brown landscape. Salt has been mined here since well before the time of the Incas. A delightful picnic lunch will be enjoyed amidst Andean scenery before returning to the Tambo Del Inca hotel in the late afternoon to rest before tomorrow's Machu Picchu trek. (B,L)

Day 8 SACRED VALLEY - MACHU PICCHU

This exciting day starts with a short walk from the hotel to the train station and catch the train for the picturesque trip through the Urubamba River valley and a magnificent cloud forest. From the mountain town of Aguas Calientes, you'll travel by bus to the sacred mountain citadel of Machu Picchu (7,875 ft.), one of the most popular destinations for Peru tours. You'll spend the whole day there, exploring the famous ruins, returning after your Machu Picchu trek for a welcome late afternoon soak in the Aguas Calientes hot springs and a dinner of regional cuisine. Your accommodations for the night will be the renowned Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, or if you prefer, you may upgrade to the famed Sanctuary Lodge at an additional cost on a space-available basis. Day 9 MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO

Early-risers will have the coveted experience of a magical Machu Picchu sunrise before the daily bustle begins. Your guided exploration through the ancient city may include a climb to the sacred peak of Huayna Picchu or a walk through a lush cloud forest to the Temple of the Moon. In the afternoon after your Machu Picchu trek, travel back to Cusco on the famous Hiram Bingham train where upon arrival in Cusco you will be transferred to the Libertador hotel, superior room. Day 10 CUSCO - LIMA CITY TOUR - HOME
After breakfast on this last day of your Peru vacation package, you'll be taken to the airport to return to Lima where our guide will be waiting to take you on a comprehensive afternoon tour of the "City of Kings." Sights include the posh Miraflores district, the modern residential suburb of San Isidro, the Government Palace, the Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace and City Hall, with a final stop at the magnificent 17th century church, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. By request, you may also visit Lima's famed Gold Museum containing ancient precious metal artifacts. Enjoy a last evening in Lima's Miraflores district with time for a leisurely dinner before being taken to the Lima International Airport for your flight home, marking the end of Southern Exploration's services.
