TALK TO A TRAVEL EXPERTSituated just 2.5 miles from the Pacific, the San Antonio Valley is Chile’s most coastal wine region. Cool sea breezes blow through vineyards spread over rolling hills, nurturing the grapes and requiring an especially keen viticultural knowledge to achieve a delicate balance of sunlight, temperature and wind. The diligent work of San Antonio winemakers has yielded excellent results, producing crisp whites and spicy reds that are increasingly capturing international attention. For today’s guided Chile wine tours, you will be met at your Santiago hotel to drive to Casa Marin Winery. Founded in 2000 by Chile’s first female vineyard owner, Maria Luz Marin, Casa Marin has been described as one of the most daring and innovative vineyards in the country. Its outstanding wines have received many awards including: Best Sauvignon Blanc in the World (2010), Winery of the Year (2010) by the industry association, Wines of Chile, and was most recently named one of the Top 100 Wineries in the World (2012) by Wine & Spirits magazine. Two of its top wines, Miramar Vineyard Syrah 2010 and Cipreses Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2011, were named the best in Chile by the countrys most prestigious wine publication, Descorchados. Following a tour and tasting of Casa Marin’s premium wines, you will enjoy a delicious lunch at the winery.
Following your meal, you’ll drive the short distance to Matetic Winery. A state-of-the-art winemaking facility, Matetic is complemented by beautiful natural surroundings. Bio-dynamically cultivated and organic, grapes are handpicked and carefully examined to ensure only those of highest quality are used in the winemaking process. The winery has been called a great ambassador for Chilean wine on the world stage. After checking in to the winery’s historic casona, you’ll head to the bodega for a tour and tasting of its distinctive wines. Spend a leisurely evening by the pool, stroll among the vines or relax in the lovely gardens and enjoy a memorable dinner of Chilean cuisine prepared with local ingredients and accompanied by Matetic wines. After breakfast at the hotel, you will enjoy a relaxed morning before meeting your guide for the drive north to the Casablanca Valley. Your first stop on today’s Chile tours is a tasting at Loma Larga vineyards, named Winery of the Year 2011 by Wine & Spirits magazine. Loma Larga continues to represent the best of the Casablanca Valley and sets the standard for quality cold-climate red wines. It has produced several award winners, receiving consistent 90+ point ratings from such prestigious publications as Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. For lunch, you’ll head to House Casa del Vino located at the Enotourism Centre of the Grupo Belen wineries, which are known for their Syrah (Tirazis). Here a culinary team led by a chef with international credentials, prepares a multi-course meal with local ingredients and paired with just the right Chile wines. Following your tasty lunch, you will be returned to Santiago, concluding today’s Chile tours. (B, L)
