Valparaíso & Casablanca Experience

Taste wine from Chile’s Casablanca Valley before spending the night in artsy Valparaíso.

|

After being picked up from your Santiago hotel, today’s drive to the coast passes first through the verdant agricultural valley of Curacavi before reaching Casablanca Valley, famous for producing some of Chile’s best white wines and cool-climate reds. Today’s Chile wine tasting will be at Casas del Bosque. This 21-year old winery encompasses 245 hectares of vineyards producing Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Merlot. Notably, their cold-climate Syrah has won best in show two-years running, and they have been named Chilean Wine Producer of the Year in the International Wine and Spirits competition held in London.

Next, you’ll arrive in Valparaíso, one of the first Chilean cities founded by the Spanish. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 for its architectural and cultural significance, the city is also one of Chile’s most interesting. You start in the downtown sector, learning about the history of Valpo and its importance in South American trade and commerce. Century-old hillside ascensores (elevators) transport you up the city’s steep hills, where a labyrinth of streets contains brightly colored buildings, bohemian cafes, elegant restaurants and spectacular views of the harbor below. You’ll travel to two of the most famous hills, Cerro Concepcion and Cerro Alegre, where you’ll enjoy lunch in one of Valparaíso’s top restaurants. After lunch, your Chile tours continue in Vina del Mar, also known as the garden city for its lush gardens and palm-lined boulevards. You’ll pass by the Reloj de Flores (flower clock) and the inviting beaches while learning about the city’s colonial history as well as its role today. You will then return to Valparaíso and get settled into your lodgings. (B,L)

Today there is no fixed schedule. With your guide and a vehicle at your disposal, you will spend the day as you like. Your guide will work with you to plan a customized experience. It could include tasting fresh seafood at the market, exploring Valparaíso’s trendy boutiques or perhaps spending more time exploring your discoveries from yesterday. One popular excursion is a visit to the former home and last resting place of Chile’s beloved poet, Pablo Neruda, at Isla Negra. After his death, the house was turned into a museum, filled with collectibles the Nobel Prize winner surrounded himself with for inspiration. After taking in more of the city and surrounding areas, you will be returned to Santiago in the afternoon, ending these memorable two days of your travel to Chile. (B)
