Trip Extension Itinerary

Cotopaxi National Park

Explore Cotopaxi’s Andean beauty: hike, stay in a historic hacienda, visit markets, and embrace village life.

|

Today the adventure begins with a fascinating drive south through the Avenue of Volcanoes, viewing the spectacular high plains that surround Cotopaxi, the world’s highest active volcano at 19,347 feet. In the park, see llamas, wild horses, deer, rabbits, the Andean gulls, hummingbirds, and perhaps the Andean condor. Stop at Limpiopungo Glacier Lake, located at the base of  Rumiñahui Volcano. Limpiopungo is home to abundant highland waterfowl including gulls, ducks, and falcons. After a hearty lunch on the trail, climb to El Parqueadero to get a breathtaking view of a nearby glacier. In the late afternoon, travel to a charming hacienda where you spend the night. (L,D)

Today, set off on an adventure through the mountains where steep agricultural terraces are visible, a glimpse into life in rural Ecuador. Depending on the day of the week, stop at a local market where you’ll have the opportunity to visit with local citizens and shopping for handcrafted goods. If today is not a market day or you have other interests, you have the option to hike around Quilotoa, a beautiful turquoise crater lake formed by a collapsed volcanic crater. Return to Quito in the afternoon. (B)
