Both waterways are teaming with wildlife.
Hacienda Concepcion offers eight stylishly appointed twin rooms in the main lodge and seven rustic-chic cabanas with covered decks for extra privacy. The hacienda is family-friendly, providing everything needed for a memorable family Amazon adventure. Youll spend both days and evenings on Amazon excursions, exploring in and around the Tambopata National Reserve. Meals are forest to table-inspired with vegetarian as well as childs menu options on request.

TALK TO A TRAVEL EXPERTYou will be transferred to the airport for the flight to Pto. Maldonado, hub of the easternmost region of the Peru Amazon. Upon arrival you will be met by the naturalist guides and taken to the Inkaterra’s own butterfly house adjacent to the airport for check-in and a welcome drink, surrounded by colorful species. Next you board a motorized dugout canoe for your 45-minute trip downriver to reach the lodge. After getting settled in your accommodations and receiving an orientation, your Amazon adventure begins. On the first afternoon it is best to accompany your guide on the walking trails around the 2,000 acre reserve to get acquainted with the neo-tropical rainforest environment. After dinner, if you wish, you may join an evening excursion on the Madre de Dios River to look for caiman and other nocturnal Amazon wildlife and view the southern constellations. (L,D)
This morning, hike deep into the Tambopata National Reserve through terra firma forest to reach Lake Sandoval for a dugout canoe ride around this beautiful oxbow lake. Here you will learn about the Reserves conservation efforts, the lakes formation and its flora and fauna, including water palms and such species as the endangered giant river otter, blue and yellow macaws, red howler monkeys, black caimans and South Americas largest freshwater fish, the arapaime (paiche) which can reach six feet in length. After these Amazon tours, you will return to the lodge for a delicious lunch and have time for a siesta in a hammock. In the late afternoon, you take a twenty-minute ride aboard a motorized canoe to the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway Interpretation Center. Ascend one of the 98-ft towers and cross the seven hanging bridges that connect the treetops 91 feet above the forest floor. After descending, you walk along the 656-ft wooden bridge over the aguajales palm swamps, home of the legendary anaconda. Here you will learn about the fauna and flora of these flooded ecosystems, part of the largest natural monoculture in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. (B,L,D)
After an early breakfast, your journey back to civilization begins, starting with the return boat ride to Puerto Maldonado and ending with your flight to Lima or Cusco, the conclusion of your Peru Amazon tours with Southern Explorations. (B)
