La Selva
Since 1986, before the dawn of ecotourism, this boutique lodge has been offering authentic Amazon rainforest adventures. Wildlife experts consider La Selva Jungle Lodge one of the world’s best birding sites. Located in the pristine Amazon rainforest of northeastern Ecuador, La Selva is set on the shore of Lake Garzococha near the Napo River, a major whitewater tributary. This is an area of great biodiversity near the country’s largest protected tract of rainforest, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. An obvious choice for birders wishing to travel to the Amazon, the lodge caters to a wide range of visitors, ideal for families, student groups and solo female travelers.

During your stay, you will be accompanied through the rainforest by experienced English-speaking naturalists. Native birding guides and wildlife trackers enhance the experience. Generally fewer than forty guests stay at the lodge at one time, allowing a guide for each group of eight visitors. Rustic by design, the comfortable and immaculate complex offers private bungalow accommodations with first-class services and amenities, including an indigenous spa and gourmet meals prepared with fresh locally-produced ingredients.

Each day, guests may choose from a variety of morning, afternoon and evening rainforest excursions, hike through an extensive trail system on easy or challenging routes, swim and fish in a nearby lake, or relax in a hammock. Activities begin early at La Selva when wildlife are on the move or gathered at certain locations to feed or drink. During the heat of the day, after lunch until late afternoon is unscheduled, giving visitors time to relax or be pampered in the spa. Following a leisurely dinner, guests may enjoy an after-dark excursion into the rainforest in search of nocturnal wildlife.
