Two New Self-Drive Costa Rica Trips

Surfer on beach at dusk in Costa Rica

Remember when Southern Explorations Founder and CEO Justin Laycob and Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Borgida went on that Costa Rica scouting mission last year? Well now the results are in. That adventure has borne the fruit of more adventures!

We are thrilled to introduce a pair of self-drive explorations of Costa Rica that dig into the country in ways we never have before. Costa Rica Surf & Turf Self-Drive and Colors of Costa Rica Self-Drive put you in the driver’s seat for a truly flexible Costa Rican adventure.

While these two brand new Southern Explorations experiences weren’t easy to put together, now that we’ve run through all the logistics and potential challenges, you can head out into the underexplored regions of Costa Rica with real peace-of-mind that we’re going to get you into the most interesting places comfortably.

We know you want to get off the beaten-path, just not with all the potential pitfalls that come with exploring the underappreciated on your own. So we’ve set you up with the ideal itinerary, book all your accommodations according to your budget and travel style preference and recommend our favorite activities along the way. All the while your trip moves at the pace you want to move. Want to up the intensity? Go for it! More interested in letting your day-to-day slow cook? Great! It’s up to you, we’ve just taken the hassle and the uncertainty out of the equation.

Not sure the self-drive route is for you? No problem, we also recently introduced Undiscovered Costa Rica, which – as its name suggests - also gets you away from the typical tourist trail and into the thick of some of Costa Rica’s best kept secrets.

Costa Rica Surf & Turf / Self-Drive

This self-driving Costa Rica tour offers flexibility and a host of adventures that will take you off the beaten path. Explore Rincon De La Vieja, Costa Rica’s Yellowstone National Park. Spend several days in the remote, protected beauty at Nosara Beach on the Nicoya Peninsula, where you can enjoy outstanding surf and spot elusive tropical birds, sea turtles, and other wildlife.

Colors of Costa Rica / Self-Drive

This flexible Costa Rica ecotour has you visiting two classic Costa Rica locations, along with one of the best undiscovered beaches in all of Costa Rica. Explore the famous Arenal Volcano area, with options to soak in natural hot springs, zipline through the rainforest, or walk among the monkeys on hanging bridges high in the forest canopy. Head to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve to explore the Sky Trek, an extensive system of trails, suspension bridges and canopy walks. Continue your Costa Rica trip in Santa Teresa, a bohemian surf town where you can relax, surf and enjoy the beach. Before heading home, make a special stop for lunch at a sustainable farm owned by a chef who has worked in Michelin-star restaurants.

Undiscovered Costa Rica

Though bio-diverse Costa Rica is Central America’s most popular destination, areas of the country are still underexplored for most visitors who travel to Costa Rica. This ten-day trip takes you on hikes in the ethereal cloud forests of San Gerardo de Dota in the mountainous interior and explores three top locations for observing humpback whales that migrate to Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast from the Arctic and Antarctica to breed and give birth. You will travel to two little-visited coastal national parks, Ballena and Corcovado, and snorkel in marine waters. Much wildlife and few tourists make these Costa Rica tours a most memorable vacation.
