Cacao Farming in the Ecuador Amazon

Cacao Farming in the Ecuador Amazon

Here in the Napo region of the Ecuador Amazon, many indigenous farmers earn at least part of their living by harvesting cacao beans. Using traditional methods, the farmers harvest pods from trees growing in the rainforest in areas of usually less than 125 acres. Farms located in more populated areas where the Amazon Rainforest has been destroyed are smaller still, mostly less than twelve acres. The Amazon cacao harvest peaks between March and July.
