Travel north from Quito to Calderon, famous for its figures made by hand from bread dough. The destination is the Awakening Valley, home of the OtavaleƱos. Here, take ample time to shop the famous Otavalo market, with its colorful textiles, paintings, ceramics, jewelry, tapestries and more, all at bargain prices. Visit the village of Peguche, where wool tapestries are made, and San Antonio de Ibarra, known for its woodcarvings. Spend the night at a charming hacienda. (B,L,D)

Day 2 OTAVALO - QUITO
Take a morning drive to the sparkling waters of Cuicocha Lake where you'll hike around this flooded volcanic crater and its floating twin islets. Along the lake, is a beautiful species of orchid that grows only at this altitude (10.562 ft). On the way back, you'll visit Cotacachi, famous for its handmade leather goods. There, buy leather clothing direct from local designers. Finally, stop at Lluman, a town of shamans. Make a late afternoon return to Quito, marking an end of Southern Explorations services, or add an extra night to enjoy more of Quito. (B)
