It was great hearing from so many of you via last month’s survey, in which we asked about your hopes for returning to travel in the future and your health and safety concerns for that return. A huge thank you goes out to everyone who took a couple minutes to answer our three simple survey questions. Your thoughtful responses have been extremely valuable as we continue to communicate with our team members on the ground throughout Latin America and begin planning our next steps towards returning to travel later this year and into 2021.

If you missed it, or would still like the opportunity to voice your thoughts on a return to travel, you can fill out our survey here.

You’ve made it clear that you want trips that give you plenty of space for social distancing and a good deal of independence when you get back out there. And with that in mind, this month, we wanted to highlight our Costa Rica self-guided trips as one of the best ways to avoid potential crowds while still exploring comfortably and with real peace-of-mind.

These three Costa Rica self-guided trip itineraries take you off-the-beaten path in a country that has received a good deal of praise for how it has handled the pandemic to date and really put you in the driver’s seat for flexible and independent adventures in some of Costa Rica’s most underexplored regions.

Costa Rica Surf & Turf Self-Drive

This self-driving Costa Rica trip offers flexibility and a host of adventures. Explore Rincon De La Vieja, Costa Rica’s version of Yellowstone National Park, and spend several days in the remote, protected beauty at Nosara Beach on the Nicoya Peninsula for outstanding surf and elusive tropical birds, turtles, and other wildlife spotting.

Colors of Costa Rica

This flexible trip has guests visiting two classic Costa Rica locations, along with one of the most underappreciated beaches in all of Costa Rica. Explore the Arenal Volcano area, with options to soak in natural hot springs, zipline through the rainforest, or walk among the monkeys on hanging bridges high in the forest canopy. Head to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve to explore the Sky Trek, an extensive system of trails, suspension bridges and canopy walks. Continue on to Santa Theresa, a bohemian surf town, to relax, surf and enjoy the beach, with a special stop for lunch at a sustainable farm owned by a chef who has worked in Michelin-star restaurants.

Costa Rica Classic Fly-and-Drive

Take off on your own to discover what makes Costa Rica one of the world's premier ecotourism destinations. This Costa Rica ecotour offers the flexibility to choose between  budget and upscale hotel alternatives, following a fixed route so you can tailor your Costa Rica adventure to your preferences. You'll visit one of the Western Hemisphere's most active volcanoes, hike in the treetops, encounter exotic wildlife and relax on Costa Rica's famous white-sand beaches.

We know you still probably have plenty of questions and concerns before heading back out there. Communication is crucial to everyone’s return to exploration. The Southern Explorations team is here and ready to answer all your questions and detail the extensive and enhanced health and safety protocols, aggressive new cleaning methods and social distancing measures being implemented by our local partners, especially at hotels and other accommodations, to ensure our guests health and safety is the number one priority when we get back out there.
