You may have recently read about Southern Explorations’ luxury experiences, whether it’s what makes one of our high-end trips a truly luxury experience, or the best times to travel to get even more from your trip, we’ve been thinking a lot about the details that take our trips to the next level.

It was with that in mind that our team of South America and Central America travel experts came together to create a compilation of our favorite complementary next level activities.

Much in the same way the right wine brings out the most from a delectable dish, these perfect pairing activities complement the destinations so well that they can change your perception of the whole trip.

Whitewater Rafting & Machu Picchu: To most people, Machu Picchu means one activity; hiking the Inca Trail. However, our Founder and CEO Justin Laycob cut his adventure teeth whitewatering his way around South America, so no one knows better than us the unbelievable appeal of rafting past the spectacular Incan ruins combined with the thrills of rapid riding. Our carefully crafted 9-day Active Machu Picchu provides it all for the traveler looking to add more adrenaline pumping adventure to their trip. In addition to whitewater rafting and an exploration of Machu Picchu, this one also includes zip-lining and mountain biking adventures across this legendary landscape.

Whale Watching & Costa Rica: Costa Rica is world-renowned for the incredible biodiversity of its jungle rainforests, but the destination’s world of wildlife diversity doesn’t end at the coastline. For more than six months of the year, between mid-July and October and then again from December to March, humpback whales visit Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast as they migrate to and from feeding and mating grounds. This gives Costa Rica the longest humpback whale watching season in the world. On our 10-day Undiscovered Costa Rica trip you’ll pair incredible whale watching experiences with off-the-beaten track explorations through the cloud forests of San Gerardo de Dota and marine water snorkeling, as well as an array of additional wildlife observing opportunities throughout this incredible country.

Stand-up Paddleboarding & the Amazon:  There might be no better way to experience the Amazon jungle than by SUP. On our Amazon SUP Adventure you’ll spend six days catching beautiful sunrises and sunsets in the Cuyabeno Lake system, spotting local wildlife - like freshwater dolphins, howler monkeys, and a tropical birds – and paddling into remote jungle regions to meet and learn more from the Siona Indigenous community, one of the few local Indigenous groups that welcome visitors. And if you’re looking to add another incredible complementary element to your Amazon experience, a yoga instructor is available to accompany the trip as well!

Wine Tasting & Patagonia: As we noted off the top, nothing brings out full flavors quite like wine, so why limit your wine pairings to food when you can do it for an entire destination? A gourmet trip through Patagonia is incomplete if you don’t spend time sampling the quality varietal wines, both red and white, found in this awe-inspiring part of the world. And talk about complementary; Argentina's top wine country of Mendoza is located within view of the Andes, creating a picturesque setting for your Argentina travel and tastings. On our 14-day Luxury Patagonia & Wineries trip, we employ this striking setting as the perfect stopover on our way to the Lakes District, as you’ll stay in historic estancias and other distinctive lodgings along the way.
