A country the size of India is bound to have more than a lifetime of experiences to offer its visitors. The challenge is in knowing which to choose during what will always be too short a vacation here. So much Argentina awaits.

Most all visitors who start or end their travel to Argentina in Buenos Aires, wish they’d spent longer. Beautiful architecture, rich history, a vibrant contemporary art scene and divine cuisine are a few reasons why. Among its distinctive neighborhoods, some are known for their history, some for their hues, some for their craft markets and pedestrian promenades, and the fanciest, the Recoleta, for its cemetery, the last resting place of First Lady Evita. Buenos Aires is a city that never sleeps, and with so much to do, you won’t want to either.

THE PARIS OF SOUTH AMERICA

Buenos Aires is a great place to try the national drink of Argentina, called mate. Appreciated for its anti-oxidant properties and the pick-me-up, it is a most potent tea, steeped from a South American holly. In sit-down establishments, mate is drunk communally from a mate cup carved from a calabash gourd through a metal straw called a bombilla. You’ll also see it being sipped while walking down the street just like Americans drink their lattes. Mate may or may not prove to be your cup of tea. Regardless, the mate cup, often decorated with sterling silver filigree, and the bombilla make emblematic souvenirs from your Argentina vacation and are sold in abundance at the Sunday San Telmo craft market.

TANGO ARGENTINO

Romantic and seductive, tango is impossible to miss in Argentina, especially in the capital. You’ll see it on the streets, in professional floor shows and in neighborhood milongas where the real people dance it. Whether you take lessons or just observe from the sidelines, tango will be in your blood when you return home.

ARGENTINA MADE RICH BY MAN AND NATURE

Tango isn’t the only emblematic experience in store for visitors. The gauchos for instance still ride. The steaks are as great as their reputation and so are the wines, produced from grapes that grow down the middle of the country near the Andes, most notably around Mendoza, famous for its Malbecs. On the border with Brazil lies the continent’s largest waterfall, Iguazu, known for mists that create endless rainbows and a span that by comparison makes Niagara look like a drippy faucet. The northwest contains multi-colored canyons and well-preserved colonial Salta, a feast for photographers. The region is fossil and cactus country too. In 160,000-acre Cardones National Park, you’ll find an exotic landscape of extraordinary columnar cacti. It’s a place for a paint brush and a camera.

INTO THE WILD

Head south and you’ll be in Patagonia, an area so vast it is divided into two regions, each with its own distinct pleasures, big lakes and aromatic forests, scenic multi-day treks for the mountaineers, day-hikes for the rest of us. One of South America’s biggest attractions is here, the turquoise Perito Moreno Glacier, known for the huge ice chunks that regularly fall from it, and so is Tierra del Fuego, a land explored by Magellan.
