- Day 1 ARRIVE MENDOZA
- You'll be met on your arrival at the Mendoza airport and taken to your hotel. Spend the afternoon on your own touring the many sights of this charming, sophisticated city of many shade trees, parks and open spaces. You'll spend the night at a comfortable hotel.
- Day 2 CLASSIC AGRELO WINE TASTING
- Today’s classic Argentina wine tours take you about 20 miles south of Mendoza to the Lujan de Cuyo wine region. You’ll taste offerings from three exceptional wineries in the Agrelo sub-appellation where Malbec reigns supreme.
Benegas Winery
This traditional winery belonged to the family of Gladys Alurralde Norton, mother of current owner Federico J. Benegas Lynch. Federico was actually born in the properties main house, where he still lives to this day. Throughout his childhood he worked every step of the way, helping his father in the winemaking process. Benegas is focused on quality and celebrating its Finca Libertad terroir. They believe in the judicious use of oak, maintaining it as a background component in the wine. Tannins should be balanced and the finish long. Their total production is only 30,000 cases. Michelle Roland says, “Benegas wines have a strong personality which is the result of a very unique terroir for its quality and the combination of French and Argentine traditions. The wines are a reflection of Frederico Benegas Lynch’s passion and his constant search for excellence.”
Matervinis Winery
This new boutique winery is dedicated to experimental soils. Their founders, however, are not new to the winemaking world: Santiago Achaval and Roberto Chipresso former owners, founder and winemakers of acclaimed Achaval Ferrer. Today, through their new project, they aim to the exploration of the oldest geologies of Pre-Cordillera soils and their impact on wine personality and flavors. With a very limited production of wines and concentrating in high quality, these pioneers are already making a revolution in the industry.
Finca Decero Winery
Once a bare patch of dirt in the foothills of the Andes, Finca Decero is now a one-of-a-kind vineyard, where each vine is nurtured by hand and the winemaking is without compromise. Free from restraint and tradition, the creators of the winery developed an ‘amano' or ‘by hand' approach that is human, sustainable and sensitive to natural differences. Enjoy a fresh, seasonal lunch designed to perfectly compliment the wine you’ll be tasting. At the end of today’s Argentina tours, travel back to your hotel for a free evening. (B,L)
Please note: Wineries subject to change without notice. Many wineries are closed on Sundays and holidays.
- Day 3 BOUTIQUE WINERIES OR ACTIVE MENDOZA TOUR
- OPTION I: Boutique Wineries
For this full day of Argentina wine tours, you’ll return to the Lujan de Cuyo wine region just south of Mendoza. The itinerary is designed for those wishing to sample the handcrafted, premium wines of four up and coming boutique wineries that produce vintages in small lots.
Finca La Anita
We start the day walking the vineyards and learning about the secret of vine growing. Located in the heart of Agrelo, at 950 meters above sea level and with a stunning view of the snowy Andes, this cozy boutique winery will surprise us with its friendly attentive service and great wines.Lead by Mariana, the house sommelier and host, we will taste for wines: Finca La Anita Malbec, Cabernet and Petit Verdot ( wines Change seasonally)
Vistalba Winery
Surrounded by 53 hectares of 40-year-old vineyards, Finca & Bodega Carlos Pulenta is the perfect result of modern technology and years of experience in high altitude vineyards. Carlos Pulenta, fifth generation of Argentine vintners, is capturing the interest of the international press, especially after the launching of the Vistalba Corte A (91 points in The Wine Cellar) a 40% each Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon with 20% Bonarda. The winery has already gained an important Award given by Great Wine Capitals of the World: Best of Architecture in Winery.
Richitelli Winery
This small family winery is an expression of the winemaker’s lifetime of dedication, passion, and hard work. Matias Richitelly, the winemaker, was born in Cafayate, the northwestern wine growing region, into a family of winemakers. Matias has worked under his father’s wing, a legendary Argentine winemaker in his own right, since the age of 8. After travelling the world studying great wine traditions and cutting his teeth at other notable Argentine wineries Matias opened Richitelli in 2009. Located in Las Compuertas, the highest sub-region of the Lujan de Cuyo, in the Andean foothills, Matias is crafting some of Argentina’s most exciting wines, with scores from 92 to 97 by Tim Atkins, Richitellis wines have definitely reached the top 100 of Argentina.
Clos de Chacras Winery
Clos de Chacras is an antique winery built in 1921 and founded by Don Bautista Gargantini with his father Bautista Jerónimo. However, after an economic crises the winery was basically abandoned until 1987 when it was recovered by the founders’ granddaughter, Silvia Gargantini, who decided to reopen the winery. Nowadays, Chef Santiago Lopez offers a six course menu paired with the icon wines from the winery. If sitting inside, a strategic view to the main patio will allow you to see grape selection in harvest time; if you prefer the outside, there is a possibility to sit at the deck overlooking ancient trees and the pond. At the end of today’s Argentina wine tours, you are returned to your hotel for a free evening. (B,L)
OPTION II: Trekking in the Andes (Vallecitos) – Upgrade: $100 per person

This scenic road takes us first to the Pre-Andes where we ascend the winding road spotting guanacos and condors, stopping along the way for photos. We then drop into Potrerillos Valley and continue on to the Cordillera Frontal, the next range in the Andes. We take a lovely journey from the Vallecitos Ski Area to the Paso de la Carrera for a picnic lunch. (B, L)

- Argentina - Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: How do I choose an itinerary?A: We offer a variety of pre-planned tours online and we’d love to design a custom trip just for you. Take a look at what we have online, then call an Adventure Travel Coordinator to discuss the trip that best fits your timeframe, budget and interests.Q: Can I make changes or additions to these tours?A: Yes! We are happy to modify any tour to meet your needs and also add pre and post-excursion extensions. If you sign up for a group departure we cannot change the group portion, but we can add extensions before and after.Q: When is the best time to go to Argentina?A: Argentina’s large size and geographic orientation means it covers many climatic zone and different areas are better to visit during different times of the year. In the south, Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego are best visited from October through April. In the north, the season is inversed and your best time to travel is from April through November. Buenos Aires and the wine country around Mendoza can be visited year round.Q: What is the weather like in Argentina?A: The weather ranges from temperate summers and cold, snowy winters in the south to rainy summers and dry, warm winters in the north. You will find a detailed weather chart on the Overview page of each trip. You can also call your Adventure Travel Coordinator to discuss the weather trends for your trip.Q: What is a typical day like in Argentina?A: The typical day varies widely from trip to trip, but all tours will have full days with guided exploration. There will be time for rest and relaxation, as well as independent exploration of the cities and towns we visit. Due to the remote nature of Argentina’s most scenic areas, some long travel days will be required.Q: How physically fit do I need to be to enjoy a trip to Argentina?A: As long as you are able to walk a couple of miles at a leisurely pace and comfortably navigate uneven terrain, you will be able to enjoy most of our tours. Some of our more adventurous tours include activities like kayaking, ice climbing and hikes up to 12 miles. Please check the physical ratings on our trip pages or contact your Adventure Travel Coordinator to see if a particular itinerary is a good fit for you.Q: How much time do we need to visit Argentina?A: Because of the vast size of Argentina we recommend at least seven days. If you wish to visit multiple regions within Argentina we recommend 12 days or more.Q: How far in advance should I book?A: As a rule, the further in advance you can plan, the more options you will have. We recommend planning a trip at three to nine months in advance, but if you want to stay at very specific luxury hotels or travel over a holiday then we recommend planning nine months to a year in advance.Q: What are your booking and cancellation policies?A: Click here to see our booking and cancellation policies.Q: Do you use certified guides?A: The guides on all of our tours are experienced, fluent in English and hold a degree in a related field. The guides are experienced in the outdoors and trained in basic first aid. We tend to use the same guides as they are accustomed to the trips we offer and understand the Southern Explorations commitment to quality.Q: What kind of accommodations can I expect?A: We primarily work with 4-star hotels in Argentina and the occasional 3-star property, provided they meet our standards. We also work with several amazing 5-star properties. All of our hotels are clean, comfortable, well-located, offer en suite bathrooms and have been personally vetted by a Southern Explorations staff member.Q: Do tours include airfare?A: We will confirm all airfare within South America and this price is listed separately from our base tour costs. You are responsible for booking international flights to/from Argentina.Q: How many people are on your tours?A: Our Argentina trips are generally limited to 8 travelers, although some areas (all-inclusive lodge stays and cruises) may require that we form larger groups with other travelers.Q: Will I get more information on packing, vaccines, currency, electricity, etc.?A: After booking you will receive a link to our online trip portal, which includes all of the need-to-know information that is specific to your itinerary. This includes packing lists, restaurant recommendations, tipping guides, FAQs, vaccine recommendations and currency information. Your Adventure Travel Coordinator will also be a great resource for any other information you may need.Q: I read about a “Reciprocity Fee” to enter Argentina, do I need to pay that?A:
There is no longer a “Reciprocity Fee” required for travelers carrying US, Canadian or Australian Passports. If you carry a passport from a different country please check with your nearest Argentine consulate for more information.
